For our last LCIP of the year, we met up at the other end of Singapore to prepare food in the soup kitchen.
Under the direction of the senior volunteers, we split up into smaller groups to attend to various responsibilities. While most of us joined the larger groups of volunteers to prepare fruits and vegetables, enthusiastically peeling endless potatoes or conversing over pineapple cutting, some of us were assigned to meats and bento packing.
There were many spotless food preparation areas, and the process was so efficient and organized that we were able to integrate ourselves into the friendly environment seamlessly. The hair nets, and even the face masks, were provided, so we could start work right away since experience in the kitchen was also not necessary.
Large boxes of the various foods were regularly placed in front of us as the deep metal trays of cubed meat or peeled fruit were quickly filled up and whisked away. The repetitive work was actually rather therapeutic, especially since most of us had just survived a month of back-to-back submissions and final exams.
After a quick wash of the equipment, despite having stood for several hours straight, we left feeling more relaxed than when we had arrived.
We look forward to visiting Willing Hearts again and hope we were able to contribute significantly!
